Unread post OTFBrutus troubleshoot
Hi, I'm using windows 8 64 bit.

When I run the software as is, I cannot select device and it crashes. If I input the device address manually, the app reports that access is denied. I can add word list and also add a keyfile.

When I run software as administrator, I can select device, and it doesn't crash. I can also add word list, but it will NOT let me drag and drop keyfiles anymore.

Could you please advise how I add keyfile when running as admin?

Thanks heaps!!

It appears to be an issue with Windows 8. Unfortunately, I don't have a Windows 8 machine to debug it on. I sent the exe to a friend and they have the same issue, you can't drag and drop keyfiles when run as administrator.

I have two possible workarounds:
1) You don't actually need the whole device/partition to test the password. You only need the header. You could run a hex editor, such as winhex or hxd, in administrator mode, open the partition or device and copy the first 1MB to a file on your hard drive. You could then run OTFBrutusGUI in non administrator mode and load this file instead of the partition.
2) Temporarily turn UAC off and run it as a non administrator.

Hi,

I really appreciate you getting back to me so fast.

I have UAC turned off, and it still will not work. I will try your other suggested method (not sure how to open my HDD header in a hex editor yet xD)

That said, I installed Windows 7 32bit on virtualbox/vmware, and I still have same issue that
1) the software will crash if not running as admin when I select device
2) when I run as admin, I still can't drag and drop key file @_@

would you please double check on win7 32bit if possible?

cheers

I don't have 32bit Windows 7, but it works fine on 64bit Windows 7.
